Description Matthew East 2005-06-09 12:28:05 UTC
Distribution/Version: Gentoo

the side panel in nautilus, when set to "Notes", does not show the note in the
file selected in the window, but instead only shows notes set on the folder in
which the browser is in. In my opinion, it should show the Note for the
folder/file selected. Otherwise there is little point setting a note at all.
1. open nautilus with side panel
2. set side panel to "Notes"
3. make a note on a file
4. select the file with one left mouse click

what happens: no note in the side panel (side panel only shows Note of the
current folder address)
what should happen: note of the file/folder selected should be shown.

thanks! Matt

is it possible to read the notes of the folders, but is not possible to read the
notes of the files in the side panel of nautilus.

Usability team, what do you think? Should the notes sidepane refer to the open
folder, the selection or to both?

I agree the ability to add/show Notes to a file is pretty hidden at the moment,
so it could certainly make sense to show (and allow editing of) the note(s) for
the current selection.

To see the note for the enclosing folder, you could either have the user
deselect everything (e.g. by clicking on the folder background-- still not
possible in list view, though), or perhaps just split the notes section into
two, with one area for the current folder, and one for the current selection.
The first option is a little less discoverable, but fits with the 'background
represents the folder' model that nautilus uses for context menus too, so I
think it's probably preferable.

Either way, multiple selections would be an issue... you could either show
nothing unless all the notes were identical (HIG-compliant, but probably quite a
costly computation), or you'd have to show each note separately somehow. But if
you had a lot of files selected, that could look pretty ugly too. And it
doesn't easily let you set the same note for each selected file, which is
sometimes useful.

Third (but least desirable) option would just be not to show notes for multiple
selections, with an explanation in the side pane, e.g. '(Multiple notes
selected)' or something. This is similar to what the file Properties dialog
does (in fact it doesn't even show you the Notes tab for multiple selections),
but that's a bit of a cop-out. If we choose to do something more functional
here, we should push the same solution to the Properties dialog.

Obsolete now that the notes sidebar has gone. Closing.
