GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 305809
gedit chokes on "binary" file
Last modified: 2005-07-21 17:11:24 UTC
Please describe the problem: When I try to open a file that's mostly text with some binary data, gedit produces the error message: Could not open the file "/home/eric/Projects/Gnu…ecoder/traffic/c07-c.dat" because gedit has not been able to automatically detect the character coding. Please, check that you are not trying to open a binary file and try again selecting a character coding in the 'Open File...' (or 'Open Location') dialogue. Steps to reproduce: 1. Open gedit. 2. Try to open a binary file. Actual results: gedit produces the error message pasted in the "description" area of this bug report. Expected results: gedit should open the file. In place of unprintable characters, gedit should display those little square boxes with four hex numbers inside of them that I see in Firefox all the time, or some equivalent. Does this happen every time? Yes. Other information: Please see the attached screenshot and sample data file.
Created attachment 46994 [details] gedit refusing to open a partly binary file.
Created attachment 46995 [details] This is a data file that causes gedit to produce the error message.
