GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 269201
Please restore executive summary to Evolution 2.x
Last modified: 2013-09-13 12:36:51 UTC
Description of Problem: Evolution had an extremely useful feature called the Executive Summary until before version 1.5 Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Upgrade to Evolution >= 1.5 2. Try to find Executive Summary component. Actual Results: The Executive Summary component is not there. Expected Results: The Executive Summary component is there. How often does this happen? Every time. Additional Information: I've read the explanation offered as an Evo 2.0 FAQ - in brief, "The summary was removed from Evolution as most of the functionality now exists throughout the GNOME desktop." This seems somewhat to have missed the point. It has *always* been the case that the various pieces of information provided by the summary could also be located elsewhere - the mail summary by looking in the appropriate folders, the task and calendar summaries by looking at Tasks and Calendar, and the weather/headlines summaries from various sources. The unique, useful, and now missing functionality offered by the summary was its ability to, well, summarise. Obviously a seperate app could be written to do just this, but it would seem to me that summarisation is an ideal task to be performed by a PIM such as Evolution. Given that the given reason for removing the summary does not seem to hold, I humbly request that a summary module be reinstated to Evolution, if developer time could be found for it. Obviously, you may spend your time as you wish, but I'd appreciate it, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. :-)

the reason it was removed is that nobody wanted to maintain it. that definitely still holds. If anyone really wanted to they'd have written a summary component, but they haven't so there's no use keeping a bug around for it. if they want to they will.
