>How-To-Repeat:
running bash shell, general user, open enlightenment settings to 
Multimedia->Sound, click-enable "Enable sound server startup".

Kernel 2.2.14-5.0 RH 6.1 with esound-0.2.17-2.  No card hardware
installed at present, none detected at bootup. 
System works smoothly and compiles kernels/modules/apps without fault
otherwise.
