Comment 2 André Klapper 2005-05-24 10:25:41 UTC
1. s/Compose a message/Compose Message (In titlebar)
still in 2.2.2, however, why change this? at least it should become "Compose
message" which would be bad english.

2. s/Spell Check Document/Check Spelling (In Edit menu)
still in 2.2.2, perhaps should become "Check spelling".

3. s/Plain text/Plain Text (In Format > Style menu)
still in 2.2.2, shouldn't be changed imho, this would become wrong spelling.

4. s/Strikeout/Strikethrough (In Format > Style menu)
still in 2.2.2

5. s/Preformat/Preformatted (In Format > Heading menu)
still in 2.2.2; should be also changed in the dropdown menu below the subject line.

6. s/Show attachments/Show Attachments (in View menu)
7. s/Text file/Text File (in Insert menu)
8. s/HTML file/HTML File (in Insert menu)
all still in 2.2.2, shouldn't be changed imho, this would become wrong spelling.

9. s/Smiley/Emoticon (in Insert menu)
still in 2.2.2, you're right but there are just more people knowing what a
smiley is then an emoticon. :-/

10. s/Oh no!/Oh No! (in Insert > Smiley menu)
still in 2.2.2, shouldn't be changed imho, this would be wrong spelling.

11. s/Find And Replace/Find and replace (Toolbar button tooltip)
12. s/Insert image into document/Insert image (Toolbar button tooltip)
13. s/Insert HTML link into document/Insert link (Toolbar button tooltip)
14. s/Insert rule into document/Insert rule (Toolbar button tooltip)
15. s/Insert table into document/Insert table (Toolbar button tooltip)
16. s/Insert HTML template into document/Insert HTML template (Toolbar button
tooltip)
all these seem to be removed since version 2.0.
Comment 3 Eugene O'Connor 2005-05-24 11:21:25 UTC
1. "Compose Message" is not grammatically incorrect. The indefinite article is
not required in the title, and it is acceptable to drop it. In the same way that
it is acceptable to use the dialog title "Create New Folder" instead of "Create
a New Folder".

2. According to the HIG capitalization guidelines, menu items take header
capitalization, that is "Check Spelling", not "Check spelling". See
http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/design-text-labels.html#layout-capitalization.

3, 6, 7, 8, 10. None of the changes suggested change the spelling of the label.
They change the capitalization in accordance with the HIG capitalization guidelines.

9. It is important that the terms we choose accurately describe what the user
can expect to see when they select the menu item. Emoticon is also the agreed
term in the GNOME Documentation Style Guide, see
http://developer.gnome.org/documents/style-guide/gnome-glossary-generic-terms.html.
