GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 231033
Reply-to doesn't autocomplete from address book or identities
Last modified: 2021-05-19 12:27:58 UTC
Description of Problem: Reply-to can't be populated from the address book. Maybe this makes sense, because it prevents idiots from setting their friends to get their mail. But there's no reason it can't look up your identities (or accounts, or whatever they're called) -- after all, they're all you! Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Move your curson into the reply-to field 2. Start typing the name of someone in your address book 3. Curse. Actual Results: The name is not autocompleted from the address book Expected Results: The name should be autocompleted. Additional Information: I want this because I want to use RT (http://www.bestpractical.com/rt/) more effectively. When I send mail now, I CC the RT address. Then the person I'm mailing inevitably fucks up and doesn't hit group-reply, so the CC gets lost. What I want to do is set the reply-to instead. But this is a hassle if I have to type it out completely each time.
technically this is because the Reply-To field in the composer isn't an addressbook entry widget, it's just a normal gtkentry or whatever. it was probably done this way because well, Reply-To is *your* address - not someone elses (which is what is kept in the addressbook). Besides, you can set a default reply-to in the account editor and so there should be no reason to change it except very rarely...and even then it would doubtfully be an address in your addressbook, right? I dunno, I suppose it could... no reason it couldn't be an addressbook widget. *sigh*
I think Reply to should have a button, and also a Drop Down box. The drop down box should list each one of your available From addresses, as well as each one of the Reply-To fields set in your account information. There are lots of instances (mine) where people use their email client as "themselves" and then answer emails going to some sort of shared folder, as a shared account, such as "info@domain.com", etc. Reply-To is a good feature for this, however it needs to be easier to fill in. I propose Reply-To have a Contact List button, as well as a drop down list. The drop down would have by default the same address chosed as From:, but also allow you to select the current accounts Reply-To address (set in the account preferences), or another account's From: or Reply to address.

since this is part of the "me" identity which is targetted to version 2.6, i'll also target this for 2.5 (i know this will be postponed, but otherwise we won't find that again here). see http://lists.ximian.com/archives/public/evolution-hackers/2004-February/002909.html
i dont think this makes sense, reply-to isn't a normal address entry, you can only specify one address for example. we don't have an addressbook entry in the account-editor for reply-to address either, nor should we.
removing old target milestone.
is this bug about auto filling fields in the wizard from the about-me informations ?

I think this should be changed, I hate having to type in my full email when I want replies to be sent to myself as well as the mailing list.
Proposing WONTFIX.
(In reply to comment #6) > i dont think this makes sense, reply-to isn't a normal address entry, you can > only specify one address for example. So what? Not supporting auto-completion is dangerous, as it only helps people entering faulty addresses in the field
+1 for adding this. Having to type in long mailing list address every time I post to a specific mailing list which requires cross-list Reply-To is PITA.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/Community/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new bug report ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
