is my operating system suitable for gimp? its an older machine with 98 windowns 
on it. it downloads fine and installs fine and then just wont work??

The released versions of gtk+-2.6 don't work on Win98. Consider to use gtk+-2.4
until a new version is released which has this problem fixed.
