Hi,

Writing an ISO image to a CD over the network is, generally, not a good idea.
There are too many things that can go wrong and can result in an unusable disc.

We only add the menu item for ISO images on local filesystems.
Comment 2 j^ 2005-03-18 17:14:09 UTC
not offering the option is still wrong in my opinion.
it could copy the file to /tmp and start burning than.
Comment 3 William Jon McCann 2005-03-18 17:16:51 UTC
That sounds reasonable. I'll see what we can do.
Comment 4 Bastien Nocera 2005-03-18 17:21:16 UTC
The only entry point into n-c-b when burning ISO images is the contextual menu,
which only appears for local files.
I'm not sure that adding a kludge like that is really required, as long as
nautilus-cd-burner clearly tells that the file should be copied locally before
burning can start.
Comment 5 William Jon McCann 2005-03-31 00:13:02 UTC
Right, after thinking more about this I don't want to do the copying.

Bastien, are you suggesting that we should show the menu item for non-local
files and then pop up a message dialog when it is used?
Comment 6 William Jon McCann 2005-10-20 14:39:43 UTC
I don't think we'll change this behavior.

Perhaps we could provide a message box saying
"Burning a disc over a network can cause problems when the network cannot keep up with your writer. Would you like to copy the disc image to your computer before you burn it?"

We could offer the user a "Yes/No/Cancel".
- "Yes" would copy it to temp_iso_dir (if it fails it tries /tmp then ~) and start the burn;
- "No" would try to burn it over the network; and
- "Cancel" would cancel.

We have this familiar dialogue that everyone is used to and then it changes in this circumstance. I would favour keeping the option there and advising of the risks. As far as I can tell, we are mooting two options here:
- Don't do anything for the user unless they move it themselves; or
- Automatically copy it over and then delete it.

I think the above suggestion is a better solution because it does not patronise the user (what you are trying to do is so stupid we will just ignore you) but still alerts the user to best-practise and automates the process if they wish.

I think it's really bad for the end user to simply forbid him this operation.

I always recorded disks from my server, never had a single failed disk. Having to copy a DVD image from the NAS, to later on burn and then delete it migh be the safer move, but it should be up tp the user to decide what to do.

My suggestions :

1. At least, inform the user that cd/dvd creator won't do it, and why. I restarted X. When I tried to burn the first CD after this rule was created, I was thinking my ISO image got corrupted ... I restarted X ,,, then restarted the machine ... untill I found this bug and noticed I was now forced to download the ISO.

2. Inform that the cd/dvd creator won't do it and why, and offer to copy the iso to a local disk that has the available space ( /tmp or ~/Desktop), and afterwards write it. That would save the manual work of having to copy the image, and pasting on the desktop, watch the copy closely until it finishes, and then click the copied iso to burn it.

3. Besides 2, also give the option to try burning it from the network anyway, saying that the operation might fail. Gnome is free software, and free software isn't supposed to rip off features that would work for many, but not for some. Gnome should be easy to use, even for the beginner, but should also be flexible to accomodate users who KNOW what they are doing...
