Whenever I try to use the edge detect plug-in on a duplicate layer on the
versions of GIMP 2.2.x for Mac and Windows XP (respectively, Gimp.app for the
Mac and the downloadable installer for Windows XP), it crashes and claims that
the plug-in is dying.

A crashing plug-in is not considered a critical problem, lowering severity.

There are several edge detect plug-ins in GIMP 2.2 and all seem to be working
well here. You will have to provide more details such as what plug-in you are
using on what kind of source image.
