GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 163288
Files with a colon impossible on (V)FAT
Last modified: 2007-01-31 21:54:19 UTC
Create a file with a colon in the name. Try to copy it in a (V)FAT directory (for example an USB key). Result: EINVAL. Of course, the problem is in the kernel. Indeed, it is a windows problem. My suggestion would for GNOME/Nautilus to be aware of the problem, so that, if it gets EINVAL on a file creation operation, if the file name contains a colon, it opens a dialog box explaining the problem, and allowing to edit the name for the would-be copied file.
This also applies to copying a file to a samba share, even when the share is in linux.
this is the older bug, but i'm duping it over to the new one since it has a lot more history. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 309584 ***
