GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 161188
too long calendar item texts should have a tooltip
Last modified: 2020-11-06 20:23:11 UTC
This bug has been opened here: https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/2746 "The birthday reminder is a little too long in french locale to fit in the clock applet, and thus it is impossible to know whose birthday it is without launching evolution. This is just a minor problem (since I generally know whose birthday it is). https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/attachment.cgi?id=602 A screenshot of the calendar applet"
This is a problem for more than just birthdays. Any entry in the Tasks or Calendar items that is too long for the space can often be truncated so as to make the entry unclear. How hard would is be to add a 'popup hint thingy thingy' (my words escape me, but the same things that pop up when you hover over Applications Menu items) that shows the whole entry?
Rodd: you probably mean 'tooltip' :-) That's the plan. The problem is that currently, GTK+ does not support tooltips on treeview rows... See bug #80980

Maybe it is possible to make the whole calendar-popup-window wider. I find it rather annoying that all tasks that appear are cut off very early, so those are sometimes hard to read. Furthermore, I think it looks more professional if the whole task/line can be seen, even if that means it needs to wrap over multiple lines per task. So maybe making the calendar-popup thice as wide, so you can view this month and the next, in combination with wrapping lines. I could live with a popup though.
As the mentioned GTK+-Problem seems to be solved (#80980), is there any progress on this one? In German, I also have the problem with not seeing, whose birthday it is. Also, seeing some more information like e.g. the place in a tooltip would be nice, that would simplify my university-schedule-handling a lot... :)
In my opinion this does not only apply for too long text summary. Other information, such as time of finish, duration, place is needed to be shown in the tooltip...
Created attachment 110986 [details] [review] Initial patch Here's a patch to get the ball rolling. It shows a simple text tooltip containing the item's summary, but I'm sure there's more we could do here. I'm open to suggestions.
I'd like the send the ending time for events (where they exist). All events state when they start (which is obviously necessary) but often, knowing when something ends is just as important. For example, if my son is at a Party, then I need to know when to drop him off and when to pick him up. Currently I have to access this second bit of information by going to the calendar view in evolution. Which I don't even use to populate calendar information since it all comes from my palm pilot using sync. It would be great to have this information in a much more accessible place.
This initial patch looks great to me, though I'm not a gnome-panel maintainer. Should we commit it and gradually iterate from there?

I'd vote for simply committing this.
