when opening a file using File->Open the progress bar runs from 0% to 100%,
stays at 100% for a few seconds (feels like nothing is happening forever) and
then the image opens.

this is not a real bug but i can imagine people will think of gimp as slow when
it comes to opening files.

You could have read the release notes. That would have saved us and you some time.
