Description csh 2004-09-28 01:13:36 UTC
Distribution: Slackware Slackware 9.1.0
Package: nautilus
Severity: major
Version: GNOME2.6.2 2.6.x
Gnome-Distributor: Dropline Systems
Synopsis: Nautilus allows you to trash files and folders which you cannot delete.
Bugzilla-Product: nautilus
Bugzilla-Component: File and Folder Operations
Bugzilla-Version: 2.6.x
Description:
Description of Problem:

Nautilus allows you to trash files and folders which you cannot delete.

For example, you could delete:

	/u/shared/images/cars

...even though you don't have write privs to several directories and
files under cars.

The problem occurs when you go to empty the trash: you get permission
errors. This is inconsistent and leaves the desktop it in a state which
cannot be changed without root priveledges, or access to the actual
owner of the trashed files.

Reversing the operation can be difficult, because the trash operation
merely moves files and folders, and after some time it may be difficult
to tell where the files were originally.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. delete a directory containing files or folders which you do not own
and do not have write access to
2. try to empty the trash
3.

Actual Results:

You are unable to empty the trashcan.

Expected Results:

If you cannot delete files or folders (empty them from the trash can),
then it seems to me that Nautilus should not allow you to trash them.

How often does this happen?

Any time the above described situation occurs.
