GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 152159
MIME type conflicts with freedesktop.org
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Reviewing all .mime files, I have discovered following conflict: *.wb1 *.wb2 *.wb3 gnumeric defines as: application/x-quattro-pro freedesktop.org defines as: application/x-quattropro Files *.{mime, keys} also contains for mime types without category part: x-dos_ms_excel, zz-winassoc-xls, comma-separated-values. Is it delibrately? Related to: http://freedesktop.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1304
Who gets to decide spelling of mime types? I.e., are you saying that one or the other is the correct one?
http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types/ But not for x- types: (1) Private values (starting with "X-") may be defined bilaterally between two cooperating agents without outside registration or standardization. Such values cannot be registered or standardized. Generally, not all people on web follow conventions, so it's OK to add missspelled MIME types files to *.keys. But definition in *.mime (or converted *.xml) is applied for local files, so conflict here causes either not recognizing local files or MIME-type x suffix conflict. In this situation, you should add as much as possible mime types to *.keys and coordinate x- MIME types in *.mime with freedesktop.org. There are two solutions: Either change spelling (and add both spellings to *.keys), or request change in shared-mime-info.
We pulled x-quattro-pro out of the air, there's no reason not to use the spelling from freedesktop. The other types have already been adjusted.
