Description Steven Garrity 2004-08-07 18:47:08 UTC
Plug in a USB or other removable storage device, like a USB Mass Storage camera,
or a USB key, delete some or all of the contents of the device with Nautius.

This moves the files into a hidden folder on the device, ".trash"

However, if you plug your camera or USB key in, delete some files to make some
room for more photos or files, you'll soon realize that you haven't actually
freed up any space - since the files you delete are still there in the .trash
folder.

I realize this is a side-effect of the current functionality, but especially for
USB Keys and cameras, we really should try to figure out a way to improve the
experience.

I was going to report this very bug, but Steven beat me to it.

It's also annoying that after you "Move to Trash" the files on your USB device
and unplug it, you can't empty the trash afterwards until you plug the device
back in. (And upon successfully emptying the trash, my Nautilus froze...
sorry, I'm too lazy to reproduce the bug and provide more detail)

.trash folders on a removable device are funny indeed. When you delete
something from a removable device, it's usually to free up space. So I'd expect
Nautilus to ask me if I want to permanently delete the files or really move them
to the trash (on my HDD).
