GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 144391
File-roller should apply password to already existing files in an archive
Last modified: 2012-08-11 12:25:48 UTC
If I create an archive, add a file to that archive and then wants to add a password for some protection, I'll still end up with an un encrypted archive. This is because file-roller only applies the password to files added after the password is given. I think the entry in the menu should say "Enable encryption" instead of "Password", and be changed to recreate the archive with everything encrypted. Most users think of the password protection as a lock for the whole archive and not for single files within the archive. This bug has acctually caused some sensitive material beeing sent unecrypted over the internet (I know the zip-encryption is not the best solution, but it is better then clear text), so I mark this bug with Severity: major.
Confirmed with 2.11.1.
This and bug 152039 seem mutually exclusives solutions to the same problem. Which would be the better solution: clearly showing which files are password-protected and which are not or applying the password-protection to the entire archive?
I confirm this with 2.18 I think there should be an option when creating an archive for example from nautilus to enable encription. I usually create archives from the nautilus context-menu but I am unable to create it with a password. Once filer roller I have to set a password and change the name of the file(s) to work around this limitation. Thanks for your great work anyway.
