Description Breda McColgan 2004-06-02 16:52:23 UTC
Description of Problem:
Several GNOME Terminal dialogs contain extraneous
text. This text should not be displayed in the
GUI. The information should be documented in the
online reference manual.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Start GNOME Terminal.
2. Choose Edit->Current Profile.

Actual Results:
1. Title and Command tab:
"The command running inside the terminal may
dynamically set a new title."
2. Effects tab:
"None (use solid color)"
3. Compatibility
"These options may cause some applications to
behave incorrectly. They are only here to allow
you to work around certain applications and
operating systems that expect different terminal
behavior."

Expected Results:
1. Title and Command tab:
Remove the sentence "The command...new title."
2. Effects tab:
"None"
3. Compatibility
Remove the paragraph "These options... terminal
behavior."

How often does this happen?
Every time.

Additional Information:
The information for 1. and 2. above is already
described in the online reference manual. The
information in 3. above should be added to the
online reference manual.

I think this is useful enough information for the user to have it thrown at their face whenever they edit the profile. Any usability expert willing to say I'm wrong?

Since this dialog isn't frequently used, it's much better to be explanatory in the dialog than in a manual many fewer people will read.

However, I do suggest removing text that is redundant and not explanatory.
* None of the occurrences of the word "Note:" are useful.
* The "Title" heading isn't useful.
* "The command running inside the terminal may dynamically set a new
title" could be shortened to "Terminal commands may change this title."
* Even better, that explanation could be merged with "Dynamically-set
title:", to produce "When terminal commands set their own titles:"
* Similarly, "Palette", "Terminal applications have these colors
available to them", and the other two labels in that section could be
merged into a single label: "Colors available to terminal
    applications:".
* The "Background", "Scrolling", and "Compatibility" headings are
    redundant.
* "None (use solid color)" contradicts itself. It should be "Solid color".

Finally, using a smaller font for explanatory text is appropriate, but using italics is unnecessary.

I used some suggestions from comment 2 in svn trunk.
Is there anything left to do?
Comment 4 Simon van der Linden 2008-12-29 20:37:27 UTC
Maybe replacing "note:" with an icon, such as in gnome-keybindings-properties?

This bug was reported against a version which is not supported any more. Developers are no longer working on this version so there will not be any bug fixes for it.
Can you please check again if the issue you reported here still happens in a recent version of GNOME and update this report by adding a comment and adjusting the 'Version' field?

Again thank you for reporting this and sorry that it could not be fixed for the version you originally used here.

Without feedback this report will be closed as INCOMPLETE after 6 weeks.
