when syntax colored vim is started, gnome-terminal crashes

Steps to reproduce the crash:
1. start gnome-terminal
2. inside it, start vim on a file and set "syntax on"

Expected Results:
show colored vim

How often does this happen?
often. interestingly, when gnome-terminal crashes and is restarted,
opening the same file with vim is OK, but crashes gnome-terminal on
another file
