Description Marius Gedminas 2004-04-12 00:34:02 UTC
Often a computer is used by a single person. It would be more convenient if
he/she did not have to always type in the same username again and again.
Automatic login strives to solve the same problem, but it sacrifices security by
doing too much. There should be a middle option that would preselect a username
and then ask for the password only. (If the password is incorrect, it makes
sense to ask for the username as well.)

KDM can do this and that's the only reason I still use it and not GDM.

Is an option to remember the last logged in user an idea?
Comment 2 Marius Gedminas 2004-04-15 20:44:56 UTC
I can see situations where an option to remember the last user would be useful.
Have you seen the kdm options dialog in KDE? It has a tab called "Convenience".
 There's a group "Preselect user":

  (*) None
  ( ) Previous
  ( ) Specify
      User: [dropdown of usernames]
  [x] Focus password

The checkbox does not make sense for GDM, since it reuses the same input control
for both the username and the password.

Why not just turn on the Face browser and only set the Include to be the
person you want. Then just click on the username.

Remembering the last user is not a good idea. Most systems do not want
to reveal what usernames exist on the machine. The face browser can be used
to meet this need, I think.
