I opened up an existing picture in GIMP in jpeg format. I then used the text
tool to add text, and I went into the font tool as well. In a few seconds, an
command prompt window pops up and gives a bunch of errors and GIMP closes.

You didn't provide any info on the bunch of errors that showed up and that would
have been the interesting part. But I guess you have fonts w/o an Unicode
character mapping. This problem is fixed in newer versions of Pango.
