gnome-panel crashes on login several times before leaving the user at the 
desktop.  Expected desktop icons are present with normal functions 
available, however no panel.  Gnome-panel cannot be run from a shell 
without same results.

SuSe 9.0 with Ximian Desktop 2

Event occured within a few days of installing Ximian Desktop 2, but not 
immediately.

I had the exact same problems on Debian unstable. Mine could be fixed
by stopping the FAM demon, havent had time to investigate further
