Description Wouter Van Hemel 2004-01-16 16:00:20 UTC
Description of Problem:

The focus switcher (alt-tab) is useless when using
multiple desktops (workspaces) because it only
shows programs on the current desktop.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. open a lot of fullscreen programs, each on
different desktops
2. press alt-tab to look for the program you want

Actual Results:
It shows one program icon

Expected Results:
It would be A LOT more useful if it would show all
the program icons. Right now, people have to go
looking for programs on different workspaces when
they want to switch the focus. Sometimes they also
forget to close programs because alt-tab does not
show them all running programs, which would be a
more intuitive thing for the switcher to do.

Additional Information:

Doesn't have to be by default, could be an gconf
option. But it isn't intuitive right now, when
people choose to use multiple workspaces and open
programs on them, I think they expect to see all
programs. People who don't use multiple
workspaces, will only have open applications on
their current desktop anyway.

Is it possible to share a preference key with the window list applet
for this? We definitely shouldn't have two different places to
configure whether all windows or just some appear in separately
alt-tab and the window list, but since the window list already has
this preference, if we could share it that would be ideal.

Not really sure what the procedure for something like that would be
though.

Erm... Hello? Who's responsible for the task switching functionality, is it
metacity functionality, or core gnome library functions?
