Description John Hardin 2003-12-17 17:45:20 UTC
It would be nice if the right-click popup menu for a file would have an
option to copy the file's filename and/or full path+filename to the clipboard.

It's possible to copy the path to the current directory out of the
"Location:" field at the top of the window, but the only ways I have found
to copy the filename itself is to (1) start the Rename process, highlight
the entire filename, paste it where you want it, and then abort the rename
process, or (2) to right click File -> Properties, paste, then close the
properties dialog. Neither is terribly obvious.

"Copy Filename" and "Copy Path+Filename" options in the popup menu would be
more handy.

Thanks!

Maybe we can just let the normal copy allow you to paste the file as a string
instead. Just like we allow DnD from nautilus to a terminal.

Please read bug 153354, because I have some extra ideas in there (it isn't just
a duplicate, it has some new stuff). I wasn't thinking just of copying the
filename to the clipboard, but to manage URLs of files as easily as managing
URLs of web sites.
Comment 7 Christian Neumair 2005-06-03 20:00:04 UTC
I wonder whether it is desirable to provide additional clipboard functionality
for a particular clipboard target. We already expose the text target and copying
a file or folder and afterwards pressing paste in a terminal window will
definitly copy the selected file path (if local) or the selected file URI (if
remote) into the terminal window.
Comment 8 William Jon McCann 2012-08-29 19:41:53 UTC
Copy currently places the URI in the clipboard and it can be pasted anywhere. I think this is fixed.
