GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 125335
Default shortcut for switching between keyboard layouts no longer works
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Package: gnome-applets Severity: normal Version: 2.4.0 Synopsis: Default shortcut for switching between keyboard layouts no longer works Bugzilla-Product: gnome-applets Bugzilla-Component: gkb Description: Description of Problem: Since Gnome 2.4, switching between keyboard layouts with a gkb shortcut does no longer work as desired. Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Add gkb to panel 2. Make sure you have configured at least two different keyboard layouts to switch between. 3. Press <Alt><Shift_L> to switch. Actual Results: Nothing happens. Same if I change the shortcut, e.g. to <AltGr><Shift_R>. I have to click the applet with the mouse to finally persuade it to switch. Which kind of sucks if you love keyboard-only navigation. Expected Results: Gkb should behave as in earlier versions, i.e. change the keyboard layout. How often does this happen? 100 % reproducible. Also tested with a fresh, unused account to verify. Additional Information: When I configure gkb to use the Windoze menu key as (single-stroke) shortcut, it works. But I would like to spare this key for other purposes. I wonder if metacity grabs the <Alt><shift> keystrokes and keeps them away from gkb. ------- Bug moved to this database by unknown@bugzilla.gnome.org 2003-10-23 15:34 ------- Reassigning to the default owner of the component, gnome-applets-maint@bugzilla.gnome.org.
Duplicate. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 101960 ***
I can't agree that this is a duplicate of #101960 Myself I have observed the behaviour described in that report many times. But the point is that the upgrade to Gnome 2.4 has broken gkb alltogether. Therefore I suppose the cause must me a new, different one. But somehow *#%&§%-Bugzilla won't let me reopen even though I'm the submitter.
The phenomenon you describe is different from Bug 101960, but their cause is common. See that bug for a patch.
