Description Vidar Braut Haarr 2003-09-08 22:46:29 UTC
None of the controls in the window have tooltips.
I have, however, no suggestion (yet) to what they should be.

Mounting/unmounting is not something that windows users converting to
linux+gnome understand.

Some other nits:
1. Shouldn't the window title be 'CD and DVD Properties', and not
'Preferences' ?
2. Should not the 'Mount CD when inserted' option be 'Mount CD/DVD when
inserted' ?

1. and 2. are fixed (1. was fixed a long time ago, for 2. I replaced
occurences of CD with disc where appropriate).
I'll be waiting for your feedback on what the tooltips might be, I
have no idea on how to make it anymore obvious.

Just a small note: As far as I know, 'disc' is the British form, and
'disk' is the American form. Then again, I'm Norwegian so I can't
really tell :)

I must have been sleeping when I filed this report. Since I don't
think 'mounting' is a good word, I want to change the wording on the
actual checkboxes. 'Mounting' could rather be put into a tooltip of
some sort, if needed.
I've got a few alternatives for the first checkbox (currently "Mount
disc when inserted"), in order of priority:

1. Make disks available (to me/GNOME?) when inserted.
2. Link (up)/Tie/Colligate disks to me/GNOME/OS/computer when inserted.

Those are my immediate ideas atleast.
Thoughts ?

It's usually "disc" when talking about "a round flat plate coated with
a magnetic substance on which data for a computer is stored".

I'll try and see what MacOS X uses as far as vocabulary is concerned.

This image says 'disk'. I also connected to irc.freenode.net/#macosx,
and an American English user said that his installation said 'disk'.

But that is not the real scope of this bug :) What do you think of my
suggestions for checkbox wording ?

I'll have some words on that. I think we should probably just remove
the auto-mount option, and always auto-mount (along with some way to
disable that for users that really don't want it).
Comment 6 Vidar Braut Haarr 2004-06-21 12:57:29 UTC
That's a great idea. I vote for your solution of just dropping the entire
auto-mount checkbox, and making it into a GConf option instead.

Currently, in my 'Drives and Media Preferences' box, I have 3 checkboxes under
'Removable Storage'. Those are:
[ ] _Mount removable drives when hot-plugged
[ ] Mount removable media when _inserted
[ ] _Auto-run programs on new drives and media

The only option there that I'm not sure if we should keep or not is the 3rd one,
"Auto-run", but the other two should be removed and put into GConf, and both be
*on* by default. The Auto-Run checkbox should also be *on* by default, since it
should be as easy as possible for non-computer users - since it should be on by
default, I guess it can be removed as well, and just made into a GConf option
like the other two.

As for the rest of the dialog, there is the "Audio CDs", "Blank CDs", "DVD
Videos" and "Digital Camera" sections. I think they should behave as follows:
If [default GNOME Application for current type is available] then
    checkbox: on
    command: fetch-from-gnome
else
    checkbox: off
    command: null
end if

Another good thing could be to notify the user if we didn't find a registered
GNOME application for handling the respecive types. We could display a text like
in 'gnome-at-properties' and say something along the lines of:
"I could not find an audio player on your computer. If you have installed one,
please point to its location below.", and show a textbox with a [Browse] button.

About the camera-icon: It's great! The only thing that bothers me is that it's
the only icon. We should either have one icon for each, or no icons at all.

Vidar, this isn't magicdev you're talking about, but gnome-volume-manager...
Comment 8 Bastien Nocera 2004-07-15 10:55:56 UTC
We won't remove the "auto-mounting" option in magicdev. But you're free to push
for those changes in gnome-volume-manager.
