Description bulbul 2003-07-10 06:41:30 UTC
I am not sure to what extent Gnome applications adhere to this convention,
but in some document viewing programs, space is used to scroll down one
"screenful" and shift+space is used to move up one screenful. It is a
further convention, in documents with pagination (e.g. PDF and PostScript),
that if the viewer is already at the top of the page and you press
shift+space then it goes to the bottom of the preceding page. Conversely,
if the viewer is at the bottom of the page, pressing shift will take you to
the top of the next page.

Programs that i know of which used this convention are: Mozilla, Konqueror,
KDVI, xdvi, and GhostView.

It would be nice to see these conventions enshrined in the HIG.

I have also filed a parallel bug for the KDE HIG here:

I have a feeling that this is already part of the keynav spec. Need to
hunt calum down for a definitive answer.

It doesn't look like it's in there:

http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gap/keynav/gtk_containers.html

I only see page up and page down.

By the way, yet another app that uses this is xpdf.

There's some discussion of this in bug #93049, which was closed as
WONTFIX. Unless we the Yelp guys were to change their mind, I'm not
sure how much point there is in recommending this in the HIG.

(FWIW, personally I don't think it works all that well in web browsers
and other documents that can have "active" content, since Space
activates the content so you get inconsistent behaviour depending on
what happens to be focused at the time.)

Bug #348906 is for Evolution, not Epiphany. Epiphany already handles space/shift-space (just like mozilla and firefox)

Could be a nice thing to add to a page on scrolling. See bug 737406.
