I use the UML option of the dia diagrammer to draw entity relationship
diagrams.  When I select the 'create a class' button it shows up in the
diagram window as a tiny solid black rectangle instead of a box with the
word 'class' in it. I then try file->preferences->view defaults and
change the width to 800, height to 1000 and magnify = 1.000 and apply.
I reopen my file but the class widget still appears as a tiny black
rectangle. I then click on the rectangle and select tools->magnify.
Dia immediately crashes with the message: Application "dia" (process
13834) has crashed due to a fatal error (Segmentation fault). Please
visit the GNOME Application Crash page for more information. I exit
the dia program completely and try to restart from scratch but the
diagram still shows only a small black rectangle. The first time I
used the dia diagrammer I was able to make the diagram I needed.

The crash was a bug in 0.88.1, where selecting any entry in the Tools menu crashed Dia immediately.  That bug was gone in 0.90.  Try selecting the magnify button in the toolbox and zoom in.  Note that the magnification factor is in percent, so you're zoomed fairly far out with 1.0% magnify.

Suggested fix also causes Dia to crash. I started up Dia and opened my
file. I then right click in the diagram to bring up the Tools menu. I
click on magnify and immediately get "Application dia (process 17310)
has crashed due to a fatal error (Segmentation fault)".

Don't use the Tools menu in 0.88.1.  It's fatally broken.
Use the *toolbox*, the separate window with the buttons.  Click on the button with a magnifying glass on it, and your cursor will change to a magnifying glass, and you can zoom in.
And if you can, upgrade to at least 0.90.
