GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 105773
Application "gnome-panel" (process xxxx) has crashed due to fatal error -- on login
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Description of Problem: Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. log in 2. alternate: "gnome-panel" from command line 3. Actual Results: Window starts up, panel paints, then error box appears. Clicking "Close" enough times leaves screen alive (can create terminal windows and run almost everything) but no panel. Expected Results: How often does this happen? every time Additional Information: Recent installation, new computer, plenty memory, disk, etc. Problem occurred after a reboot, many days after previous reboot. Things that changed since previous reboot: - installation of SunOne Studio - ? installation of Java JDK 1.4.1 (not sure if rebooted since that installation or not) Open Hat Linux 8
Thanks for the bug report. We'll need more information to proceed, though. Can you get us a stack trace (see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/getting-traces.cgi for information on how to do this) Also, a pointer: if it was gnome-panel that crashed, then the product should be 'gnome-panel' and not 'gdm'
Created attachment 14392 [details] stack trace
Other conditions not previously specified: The bug happens only for the root user (root was used to install the software noted above, in case that is relevant). I am able to use gnome-panel fine from other users of the system.
You must have a vertical panel for the root user and a horizontal panel for everyone else. You are apparently the latest vicitim of the infamous vertical panel crasher bug. Havoc has a comment in bug 94625 about where you can get fixed packages. Reopening, so that I can mark as a duplicate of 94625.
