CAnt seem to log onto the internet and also cannot get a screen on the desktop that has all of the necassary icons.

You're dealing with one of the infamous gnome-panel crasher bugs. 
It's legendary for the number of people that were affected with this
problem.  Please upgrade.  If you still experience problems, let us know.
