GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 102585
Sessions capplet UI
Last modified: 2009-06-21 12:42:31 UTC
Looking at the session capplet: o "Order" in the "Current Session" and "Startup Programs" tabs is slightly confusing, since it doesn't necessarily go "1,2,3" etc. It goes "0, 20, 40, 40, 40, 50." Maybe a "Move up"..."Move down" style would be better. o The "Current Session" tab has "Style" and "State" columns. Apparently the style is twirly and the state is cog :-) The icons don't tell me anything about the program. (Well, they do if I look at the lists at the top, but that belies the purpose of the icons.) o What's a "Trash" or "Settings" state?

Style is explained on the help page, but I agree it's not intuitive. I think it would be better if 'Normal' were instead called 'Autostart', and then 'Trash' called 'Normal'. The difference between 'Settings' and 'Normal' really isn't very clear. I think a more significant problem is that the entire 'Current Session' tab has a bit of an identity crisis - half its functionality is shared with the 'Startup Programs' tab (which is most of the 'Normal' and 'Settings' style programs) and gnome-system-monitor, which covers the 'Trash' style programs. I'd like to suggest that the functionality of the 'Startup Programs' and 'Current Session' tabs could be partially merged. The UI should be similar to the 'Startup Programs' tab, but also contain a checkbox column called 'Automatically Restart' (similar to the current 'Enabled' column) and also a column for the order like in the 'Current Session' tab. This table would then contain all the 'Normal', 'Restart', and 'Settings' entries from the 'Current Session' tab. The 'Trash' entries don't need to be displayed - if the user wishes to remove one from the session, that can be done using gnome-system-monitor, and if the user wishes to change it to Normal/Settings/Restart style, they can add it to the new 'Startup Programs' list. I'm not sure if I've explained that very clearly, I'll try making a mockup.
Jared: actually, I think this tab should be merged with gnome-system-monitor. We just need to figure out what's important in there that needs to be kept and move to g-s-m.
We removed this from gnome-session-properties a while ago. There's a bug to put back the interesting features in g-s-m, so closing as duplicate of that one. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 421912 ***
