Description Alan Horkan 2002-12-02 20:19:17 UTC
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/dia-list/2002-November/msg00208.html

As Dia get more and more shapes it is increasingly difficult to organise
them sensibly.

at least in Visio 2000

With a a simple menu structure you cannot look at more than one branch of
the tree at a time, with a treeview it makes it possible to see thew whole
tree at once.

More info to follow ...
screenshots and hopefully mockups if i have time

I may as well mention here (again?) that in Visio the shapes widget is
just a file icon view.

You can view it as Large Icons, List View, etc.
In effect the Dia uses just a "Button list" which i think is great
because the shapes behave similarly to the tools (unlike Visio/Kivio).
If the Shape widget in Dia were to be converted to a file icon view it
would be terrible shame to loose the button list view.

I dont have any other vaguely relevant screenshots, but you all know
what a Tree View looks like and presumabley understand how awkward a
menu with lots of submenus can be.

hmm mockyup ...

A quick and dirty mockup of what i am trying to get at.

I cannot visualise how tearing away sheets might work. Need to think
about it more.
Comment 3 Lars Clausen 2002-12-02 21:18:57 UTC
I think this is the right idea. We need to have more structure in the sheets selection, but we also need to preserve the buttonness of the shape icons. The rest is just a question of layout.
