GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 689938
Can't create a VM from the Windows 8 DVD
Last modified: 2016-03-31 14:02:48 UTC
I'm trying to create a W8 VM from my genuine Dell W8 DVD. Steps to reproduce: 1. Insert the W8 DVD and wait for Gnome to detect it 2. Launch Boxes 3. Click "Continue" as I've no previously existing machine 4. Boxes doesn't find by default the W8 DVD, so click on "Select a file" Here, there is no way create the VM from the W8 DVD. The W8 DVD is mounted as "UDF Volume", and in the dialog box to choose the installation source, selecting the DVD and click "Open" makes the dialog deeps into the selected folder. Tested with Ubuntu 12.10 64bit Gnome Remix + Gnome 3 PPA.

Launch Boxes You actually should be getting a notification to launch Boxes. Do you click the button presented or launch Boxes yourself? > 3. AFAICT there is no way to tell file chooser dialog to treat folders representing devices/filesystems as special so it treats it like a normal folder. What you need to do is to browse to the device file in question.
Hi, Thanks for your answer. I'll check tonight for confirmation, but I think Gnome doesn't propose to launch Boxes when I insert the DVD. Regarding to find the file of the drive, that's a bit too tricky for me. I've created an ISO from the DVD, and I'll create the VM from this image.

Well you really shouldn't be needing to do that. You should be: 1. Getting a dialog/notification for launchiing Boxes when you insert the media. 2. See the media listed in the wizard. Since both 1. and 2. are not working for you, there must be something wrong with udev or something. First thing you want to check is whether libosinfo package installs the needed udev rule. See if you could find '95-osinfo.rules' on your machine. If you can't, thats your problem that you want to file on the ubuntu package.
The Debian (& Ubuntu) libosinfo packaging doesn't install the 95-osinfo.rules file. We'll need to report this to the Debian maintainer.
Jeremy, thanks for your help. Just for my understanding, you've tagged this report as "RESOLVED" and "NOTGNOME", what's now the process? Should I file a report elsewhere? Do you?
I marked this bug as NOTGNOME because it's a packaging bug, not a GNOME bug. You can report this to Ubuntu (for the libosinfo package) or to Debian ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Debian/Bugs ) If you don't do it, I probably will. Thanks!
Ok. I do confirm Gnome doesn't propose to create a VM at DVD insertion. And I'm not even sure what we are talking about exactly, feel free to file the bug by yourself, you seem to be a far more qualified person to do it than me.
romu, Ok I filed http://bugs.debian.org/695818 It turns out all you need to do is install libosinfo-bin.
It works, thanks Jeremy.
