Description Michael Gratton 2002-07-09 03:53:14 UTC
I use a single menu panel with quite a few applets on my Gnome desktops,
and hence room is at a premium for me. In G1, I could disable the large
"lookup" button on the gdict applet, but that is no longer the case under
G2. I'd like to be able to disable that button under G2, or at least have
it made smaller, to reclaim a large amount of wasted space.

I see the following possibilities:

 - Make the button configurable.
 - Add an icon (the sock "search" icon?) and make the button obey the
user's toolbar text/icon button prefs.

I'd suggest the second item is best as it means there isn't Yet Another
User Preference, and it follows a user's existing prefs.

whadaya think calum? I'm tempted by just using GTK_STOCK_FIND but I
guess then there is no mnemonics. Is it such an important thing?

Hmm... replacing the "Find" button with a graphical button is probably
just about acceptable for an applet, provided it has the correct
tooltip/accessible description.

The 'follow the user's toolbar prefs' idea is a good one, though, and
probably the more correct thing to do longer term. However, it
doesn't really get rid of any preferences, as to do it properly you'd
probably want to allow the user to over-ride it anyway:

(o) Follow "Menu and Toolbar" preferences
( ) Show icon only
( ) Show text only
( ) Show both

(We already have one other app that does this, but I forget which
one... EOG or GGV I think.)

"However, it doesn't really get rid of any preferences, as to do it

I can see the point of allowing a user to override it in a situation
like this - but perhaps the pref sould be on the "Toolbars and Menus"
or "Panel" capplet, rather on every single panel applet.

I'm not sure what the benefit is of EOG/GGV allowing you to override
the system settings. Gtop used to dos something similar - allow you to
override the system-wide MDI prefs, but it kept on reverting to it's
own default, rather than the system's, which weas very frustrating..
This is probably beyond the scope of this bug, tho'. :)

Punting this for 2.2 unless you guys have a good solution soon...and
even then I'm not totally sure if we'd be allowed.
Comment 5 Calum Benson 2002-08-02 18:17:50 UTC
My only concern about making it follow the 'menus and toolbars'
preference is that this is neither a menu or a toolbar, so the user
probably wouldn't ever figure out how to change it.

In 1.4 we had an option to show graphics on dialog buttons or not,
where do we change that now, if anywhere? That would probably be a
more logical setting for it to follow.

The "lookup" button has now been replaced by a dictionary icon, just like with
the contact-lookup-applet. You can still click on it to open the dictionary window.
I'm closing the bug, please feel free to re-open if you feel that's not a good
solution.
