Description Elad Alfassa 2014-08-15 18:26:30 UTC
I want to listen to all the albums by the same band in the order they were released, which is the "intended" listening order. I don't want to create a playlist for that, because I want to see in which album I am now and such.

As such, I think it would be better to sort albums by year.
What do you think?
Comment 1 Vadim Rutkovsky 2014-11-12 20:48:02 UTC
That makes sense, we could have implemented a setting for default sorting order.

OTOH since we first display album name and then album year it would make sense to keep name sorting a default setting.
Comment 2 Vadim Rutkovsky 2015-03-01 15:19:48 UTC
We should add settings for smart playlists here - track limit, date length etc.

The artist view should be focused on the artist. The year of publication is an important reference to their work, so sorting by release date makes sense.

It is most common to sort by recency, so that newest releases are shown at the top.

Indeed.

While I agree that sometimes it would be useful to get "the new stuff" first, most of the time you want the chronologic order, or as Elad called it the "intended" order. So I'd say the default should be oldest first, but there should be a way (button?) to reverse the order.

Just scroll to the bottom? I don't see the need for the ability to reorder here.

Well the thing is I want to be able to listen to the whole discography (or a subset) of an artist in the "correct" order (chronogically).

Currently during playback when you reach the end of an album, it continues to the first track of the next album, so they'd just need to be sorted oldest first.

Given this bit of context and seeing as I don't care for a newest first presentation, do you think we should then make oldest first the default and not provide the ability to reorder? If we agree on this, there is indeed no need for this. If you still want your newest first order, I guess the reverse button has a reason to exist.

That's what I'd recommend, yes. :)

Updating title to reflect goals

I just tried current master and I noticed that it's already be changed to do that. This seems to be an unconscious changed that occured while optimizing the queries. Closing this as fixed.

I'd like to add my 2 cents. All use cases mentioned in this bug are related to playback so it seems (smart) playlists would be the obvious way to fix this.
Changing the artist view to fix issues with playback ordering just doesn't make sense.

Also changing the album sorting to chronological ordering makes it a lot more difficult to find an album, especially when the artist has a lot of albums. You will need to know the chronological ordering of the albums to be able to find a specific album in the "pile" of albums.
