Description Sébastien Wilmet 2012-11-16 19:05:05 UTC
The current application icon doesn't look nice for small sizes (16x16, 24x24, etc), and is not available in a vectorial format (SVG).

Here are some requirements for a new application icon:
- Available in SVG.
- The icon should look nice in both small sizes and big sizes.
- We should see that the purpose of latexila is to write documents (some lines of text, for example).
- A reference to the tequila would be nice, but is not absolutely required.

An idea is to take a Greek letter, put some lines of text inside it, with the "blue agave" and orange colors (the same colors as in the logo on top of the project web site, or in help->about). The Greek letter would come from a LaTeX document.

Interesting Greek letters: \Gamma, \Pi and \Omega (in uppercase). We can easily add lines of text inside them.

More interestingly, if we rotate by 180 degrees the Omega, we obtain a drop of tequila (with a bit of imagination).

This is of course just an idea. If you have other ideas, don't hesitate!

I'm really a beginner with Inkscape (or other similar applications), and I don't have the time to learn correctly how to use it. So if somebody wants to contribute, it would really be appreciated!

I forgot to explain another idea:

A sheet of paper with a Mexican hat. But the hat can be more difficult to do, especially for small sizes I think.

Maybe give https://live.gnome.org/GnomeArt/ArtRequests a try?

For the time being, why not settle with something which doesn't satisfy your exquisite requirements but at least looks good in a modern environment?
Comment 6 Sodhi, Cedric 2013-02-22 16:00:21 UTC
I'll design a SVG logo in a few weeks from now. If I don't deliver, feel free to remind me.
Comment 7 Sébastien Wilmet 2013-02-25 16:14:13 UTC
The first icon was based on the current logo:

http://projects.gnome.org/latexila/images/logo.png

The problem with this first icon was for small sizes, but it wouldn't be a problem for gnome-shell.

So if we focus only on gnome-shell, then I prefer the icon based on the logo.

Icon made by Pieter Pareit

Pieter Pareit has sent me an email some time ago with this nice icon. But there is no SVG version yet.

I reopen the bug. I don't like the icon for small sizes, like with Xfce.

New really simple icon

I've created a new icon, really really simple, but it looks nice in a small size.

It requires some work for bigger sizes (to look nice in GNOME Shell too), and for creating the SVG.

Some suggestions
Comment 13 f.alexander.wilms@gmail.com 2014-09-16 03:54:48 UTC
I created a few icons based on Sébastiens suggestions, see attachment above.

I think they still don't seamlessly fit in with the standard gnome app icons, though. Maybe you could ask jimmac?
Comment 14 Sébastien Wilmet 2014-10-10 13:56:46 UTC
Thank you Alexander. I think the icon at the bottom-right is fairly good. Can you create a SVG with only that icon, and create PNGs for the different sizes?
Comment 15 Sébastien Wilmet 2014-10-10 14:00:57 UTC
Mmh, maybe if you move the glass/schema on the left, the pencil can be moved more on the left too, so it better fits for smaller sizes.

I have an exam coming up, so I'll probably get around to doing it next week.
Comment 17 Sébastien Wilmet 2014-10-12 20:06:51 UTC
Thanks, no problem, there is no hurry.

The Gnome Design Team offers help for developers: https://wiki.gnome.org/Design

Since mine look rather like filetype icons and not as slick as e.g. the new Gnome Builder icon, it might be better to ask them for help. I'm afraid mine would look out of place.
Comment 19 Marco Milone 2015-02-07 22:27:58 UTC
How about a public announcement/contest for an icon? I think a lot of artist could be glad to help, but maybe they don't even know that an icon is needed.

If you call for help on your blog or on the wiki page, we can then spread the request on social networks / websites.

Re-added LaTeXila to the art requests:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Design/ArtRequests
https://wiki.gnome.org/Design/ArtRequests/LaTeXilaIcon

Let's see if someone is interested. Otherwise I can write a blog post, indeed.
Comment 21 Sébastien Wilmet 2015-05-07 09:46:00 UTC
Another idea: take the gedit icon (the "accessories-text-editor" icon) and modify it to include a figure or a table, so it looks more "scientific".

A bit like the difference between the "text-x-generic" and "x-office-document" icons. "text-x-generic" contains only text, "x-office-document" contains also a figure.
Comment 22 f.alexander.wilms 2015-08-29 01:16:59 UTC
Since there weren't any takers, could you write a blog post? I think something similar in style to Gnome Calendar's new icon would look great.
Comment 23 Sébastien Wilmet 2015-08-30 14:49:55 UTC
Yes, you're right. I plan to write a blog post for the 3.18 version, so I can ask at the same time for a new application icon.
Comment 25 Sébastien Wilmet 2015-10-25 13:15:17 UTC
I think that nowadays I don't really like the relation to the tequila, at least not for the icon/logo, or at least not directly. E.g. I don't really like a glass or bottle of tequila, but the blue agave or a Mexican hat is OK.

These last few years I've even thought about maybe renaming LaTeXila to gLaTeXedit or something. So it's better to have an icon that shows more clearly that the application is a text editor. And, if possible, a relation to the scientific world.
