GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 589129
Nautilus visible columns cannot be modified
Last modified: 2009-11-02 15:52:22 UTC
this report has been filed here: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/401414 "Expected behavior: In nautilus, select View > Visible Columns... Add or remove columns by selecting checkboxes. Observe the desired effect in the nautilus folder viewing pane. Actual: Selecting or deselecting checkboxes to show or hide visible colums has no effect whatsoever and the settings cannot be applied. Also, any customizations to the view (e.g. setting a pictures folder to icon view, when list view is the default) will not be remembered. Set a folder to a different view, open another folder then return to the one you changed and find it has returned back to your default view, thus losing your changes." Thanks,
Is it related that nautilus forget the window geometry? I have to drag it smaller everytime I need a filebrowser open.
Still seeing this on nautilus 2.28.0. Verified with daily live CD also. Here's more specific STR: 1) Open nautilus. Select View > Visible Columns... 2) Highlight "Name". Press [Move Down]. NOTE: nothing happens - no visible change in display 3) Press [Move Down] again. NOTE: "Name" column moves down (to the right) one column position 4) Press [Move Up]. NOTE: "Name" column moves down (to the right) one column position. 5) This will continue indefinitely, with the desired action always one step behind what is show in the nautilus window. You can close the "visible columns selector" at any time and press [F5] to get the layout you actually selected. This is a seriously confusing usability issue and unless a user is aware that every change is lagging by one action, it's pretty hard to customize the nautilus window to your liking.
Patch exists in [1]. Please give that one a try and comment if it was working or not. [1] https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=597227
