Description Rahul Sundaram 2009-06-13 14:19:08 UTC
Auto start as a application doesn't work properly and starts the search interface by default instead of minimizing itself to the system tray automatically similar to other applications.

While running as a applet is a feasible workaround for those running GNOME, it would still be useful to fix this. Download bug reported by user at

Either the applet is added to the panel like any other applet, or the tomby is started from the command line, and if it can find a Notification area to put itself it while not open the recent notes.

Off course, since the GNOME panel takes time to startup you might be running in a "race" condition.

Hub,

Not everybody can run the panel applet. There are people running Gnote under KDE for example. Anyway we can ensure that this app starts after the panel?
Comment 3 Hubert Figuiere (:hub) 2009-06-15 16:20:04 UTC
The original reporter DO run a GNOME panel.

It does work as a status icon otherwise. But if the area where the status icon gets embedded is not available, there is nothing I can do. It already wait for it to startup, but the panel can take some time.
Comment 4 Michel Alexandre Salim 2009-08-21 16:05:07 UTC
The problem is exacerbated now that some GNOME configurations for 2.28 and above, e.g. those running gnome-shell, *can't* run panel applets.

Is there a way for an application to detect whether a notification area is available, and so we can make gnote keep sleeping-and-retrying until a notification area is indeed available?

Problem still exists as of 0.6.2 -- triggered on slower systems such as netbooks.
