Moving from the downstream bugzilla:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can reproduce this with Evolution, with a USB Flash Disk, with a directory structure:
 /dcim/100casio/
      img2.jpg img.jpg text.txt

which, on plugging in, will show a system dialog offering to open gThumb Image Viewer. I've no exact steps to reproduce this, unfortunately. It seemed to be related to new files on the USB, but then not always. I thought also about thumbnail creator, but no clue in this way. Sometimes it does just after selecting a local file (from ~), but the File Chooser Dialog being opened on the USB device (I chose a file from there previously).

very similar to bug #574835 , maybe related to bug #573970
I'm marking this as a duplicate of the former.
