Description Bruno Duyé 2009-02-26 14:03:43 UTC
Hi all,
First of all, thanks for Vinagre. I often use it and like it.

But the only thing I hardly miss is the data compression option (-compresslevel
for xtightvncviewer). I really don't know if my ask needs a lot of work,
and if the xtightvnc code is easilly adaptable to Vinagre, but it would be for
me the latest thing that will make Vinagre usable in «real life» cases.

Regards
Bruno Duyé

I would have to agree with this one. Over the Internet or over a WiFi connection, Vinagre is simply unusable.

How do I know this? I actually use it in real-world situations, and most of the time I find myself reverting to another VNC viewer.

krdc on KDE and Screen Sharing on OS X (and not to mention the Vino server) all support compression and progressive display. I do not like waiting >30 seconds for my screen to update when using Vinagre.

This sounds great... one question: does vino support this, too?
Comment 7 Jeremy Visser 2009-10-26 13:54:55 UTC
Yes, Vino already supports compression. For everyday use, I currently use krdc to connect to Vino servers, which is much faster, and you can see the compression artifacts are there (a good thing, not a bad thing :)).

Very quick response, Jonh — thank you. Will test this and report back.

Just tested the compression feature, and it definitely makes a hell of a difference! Many thanks for implementing this!
