Description Nick Levinson 2009-02-08 07:44:33 UTC
In Evolution 2.2.2 > Edit menu > Preferences command > Mail Preferences > HTML Mail > Plain Text Mode > HTML Mode, the menu item "Only ever shown PLAIN" is grammatically incomprehensible.

Since the other two menu items are "Show HTML if present" and "Prefer PLAIN" (all without quote marks), I have no idea what the third item is supposed to mean.

If that command is phrased the same way in the latest version of Evolution, a rewriting is a good idea.

Thank you.

Are you sure you mean Evolution 2.2.2 and not 2.22? 2.2 is from 2005.

FWIW, the meanings are:

  - "Show HTML if present"

If you receive a mail with both text/html and text/plain parts, show
the text/html part (considered the "normal" behavior).

  - "Prefer PLAIN"

If you receive a mail with both text/html and text/plain parts, show
the text/plain part (for those who dislike HTML mail).

  - "Only ever show PLAIN"

If you receive a mail with -only- a text/html part, convert it to
text/plain as best we can (for those who hate HTML mail).

Can you suggest better wording?

Now I understand. To make it easier, within the HTML Mail tab page, I would edit the section heading "Plain Text Mode" to "Text or HTML", drop the menu title ("HTML Mode"), and present the menu as these:
Show HTML
Show PLAIN
Show or convert to PLAIN

With this, there's probably no need to clarify the help file.

It is 2.2.2; I have Fedora Core 4 Linux, but before posting I looked for this issue including for all Evolution versions in 3 bug-reporting systems (Ximian's, Novell's, and Gnome's) and didn't see it reported (hopefully, I didn't miss it), so unless it was edited without a bug report it seemed likely to have remained.

Thank you.

The wording is same, only some little description had been added in bug #470291 to the options recently. I like Matt's descriptions quite much, definitely with those "dislike" and "hate". :)
