Description F Wolff 2009-01-10 21:30:06 UTC
Thank you for the many comments already to help translators. I include a few strings here in my report that might need attention, although I realise there might be legitimate reasons for them to be in there even if it looks unnecessary. I collected them during translation, and hope it will help to simplify the file for translations.

I struggled with these strings, which I'm not sure should be translated at all. Comments would help to make them easily and accurately translatable.

This doesn't seem to follow the HIG - the tooltip should be sentence case. Either way, I don't think the tooltip contributes much. I would probably reword both.

I hope this helps.

Oh nice. Wanted to report some of them myself today. :)

I found a few more messages that are similar, and some are just very hard to translate or understand their spacing. Please align them or provide comments.

At least one of these must be a spelling mistake, I guess.

Comment 3 F Wolff 2009-03-02 20:40:16 UTC
Furthermore, I found some concatenated strings, but I'm not sure how widespread it is.

This message:
#: ../mail/mail.error.xml.h:58
msgid "Error while {0}."

seems to include this message:

#: ../mail/mail-ops.c:265
msgid "Fetching Mail"

with no explanation given to the translator that the second one is actually a sentence fragment that must complete a different sentence and comply with grammar started elsewhere in the file. I have no idea which other messages might still be substituted into the {0} above. Please don't split the sentences, or if there is no way not to do that, it is crucially important to have comments for translators. For more information, please see http://live.gnome.org/TranslationProject/DevGuidelines/Never%20split%20sentences
Comment 4 F Wolff 2009-03-14 07:22:34 UTC
After more translation, here is some more feedback on the source texts.

This message seems to have something coming after it, but it is unclear what it could be.
#: ../mail/mail-config.glade.h:191
msgid "_Shrink To / Cc / Bcc headers to "

Are these near-identical messages definitely all necessary?
#: ../mail/mail-config.glade.h:1

msgid "A folder named \"{0}\" already exists. Please use a different name."

"body"

msgid ""

Can the common part in these two perhaps be reused as a single message to save translation time?
#: ../mail/mail.error.xml.h:72
msgid ""
"Many email systems add an Apparently-To header to messages that only have "
"BCC recipients. This header, if added, will list all of your recipients to "
"your message anyway. To avoid this, you should add at least one To: or CC: "
"recipient."
#: ../mail/mail.error.xml.h:98
msgid ""
"The contact list you are sending to is configured to hide list recipients.\n"
"\n"
"Many email systems add an Apparently-To header to messages that only have "
"BCC recipients. This header, if added, will list all of your recipients in "
"your message. To avoid this, you should add at least one To: or CC: "
"recipient. "

Ditto here, except I don't know how how to translate this anyway. What will be filled into the variable? In some cases the snippets filled in at the variable will have to be translated differently if they are used after "because".
#: ../mail/mail.error.xml.h:18
msgid "Because \"{0}\"."
#: ../mail/mail.error.xml.h:20
msgid "Because \"{2}\"."

I don't know where this message is used, but it looks as if it might need to use ngettext for proper handling of plurals.
#: ../mail/mail.error.xml.h:12
msgid "Are you sure you want to open {0} messages at once?"

This message seems to miss a fullstop compared to all the strings around it in the PO file.
#: ../mail/mail.error.xml.h:31
msgid "Cannot open source \"{1}\""

Should this perhaps be "subfolders' contents" or "subfolder contents"?
#: ../mail/mail.error.xml.h:62
msgid ""
"If you delete the folder, all of its contents and its subfolders contents "
"will be deleted permanently."

> #. Automatically generated. Do not edit.
> #: ../mail/em-filter-i18n.h:2

Yeah, it's not for translators, it's a comment at the beginning of an autogenerated file. Bad intltool takes it even it doesn't precede with Translators/To Translators or similar text.

> #: ../mail/em-folder-browser.c:218
> msgid "Unread Messages"
> msgid "Read Messages"

These are placed in ../modules/mail/e-mail-shell-view-actions.c these days, so I believe it's more clear now and doesn't worth adding a comment for each of them.

> msgid "Or_ganizer:" vs. msgid "Organi_zer:"
> msgid "Ca_tegories..." vs. "Categor_ies..."
> msgid "_Empty Trash" vs. "Empty _Trash"
> msgid "Cle_ar" vs. "Clea_r"

These are correct, the mnemonic collides with other item in the dialog, thus couldn't be used.

> The use of "timezone" vs. "time zone" is inconsistent throughout the file.

true, though it sometimes a key name (those in .schema file). I would rather keep this as is.

I didn't get this, it works fine for me. You can always change it in whatever way you like in your translation file :)

> msgid "Canceled"
> msgid "Canceled."
> msgid "Cancelled"

tell me which one is correct and I'll be happy to fix it in sources.

(In reply to comment #3)
> msgid "Error while {0}."
> seems to include this message:

That's correct. Unfortunately I've no idea how to write a translator comment into .error.xml file, which is transformed by somethig called INTLTOOL_MERGE. Basically, the {0} can be replaced with any action user can do and it has a name.

> msgid "A folder named \"{0}\" already exists. Please use a different name."
> msgid "A folder named \"{1}\" already exists. Please use a different name."
Pity, one is for a folder rename, other is for a vfolder creation.

> Can the common part in these two perhaps be reused as a single message to save
> translation time?
It unfortunately cannot. The .error.xml files don't support such function.

I guess I addressed most of your your concerns, though not all. Please open a new bug report if you find anything, or have answers for the above. just not that some of your issues were fixed within other bug reports.

I'm wrong, it knows about translator comments. Let me add them.
