GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 556925
Unable to connect to WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK protected networks
Last modified: 2009-03-05 11:32:29 UTC
Kernel: 2.6.27.1 (prob. unrelated, happend with earlyer versions too) NetworkManager: SVN r4185 (2008-10-16) Wifi NIC: Atheros AR5212, driver: ath5k I am unable to connect to WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK protected networks. Unprotected networks work fine. WPA-EAP works fine too. It only happens with NetworkManager. When i try to connect to these networks "manually" with wpa_supplicant it works just fine (with just de name and the psk set in the wpa_supp config file). I'll attach the log of one attempt to connect recoreded with NetworkManager --no-daemon. I searched the web a bit for the same NM error output. These logs were all pre NM-0.7 and until somewhen in the summer of this year it worked just fine with NM SVN HEAD and WPA-PSK. Another possible unrealted thing: After the failed attempt nm-applet asks me again for the password, the old pw is not the one i entred but some hex representation of it (i assume).

Could you provide the 'iwlist wlan0 scan' output for your AP, obscuring the BSSID if you wish? I'd like to see the WPA/WPA2 information elements.
Of course. $ iwlist wlan0 scan wlan0 Scan completed : Cell 01 - Address: DE:AD:BE:EF:DE:AD ESSID:"someessid" Mode:Master Channel:11 Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11) Quality=51/100 Signal level:-69 dBm Noise level=-102 dBm Encryption key:on IE: WPA Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s 12 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Extra:tsf=000007dc3c2f1181 Extra: Last beacon: 26ms ago
Could you add "-dddt" to the end of the Exec= line in /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/fi.epitest.hostap.WPASupplicant.service, and then try to connection, get the failure, and then attach /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log? The driver is getting associated to the AP, but it's failing in the WPA handshake. Are you sure the passphrase you entered is correct? BTW, the "hex" you see is actually the WPA hex key, which is what the passphrase gets converted into anyway (even in wpa_supplicant).
Unfortunately I am not able to reproduce this atm. I switched to another Linux distribution which uses a slightly older NM Version (0.7.0 compared to SVN). I currently have no problem to connect to WPA networks. Since no one else seems to be interested in this problem i propose we close the bug for now. If my NM here is eventually updated and the problem occurs again I'll reopen the bug and post the desired information.
Ok, will close then, please reopen if you see it again.
