Confirming. Thanks for your efforts. 

The basic idea looks fine, but I'd prefer another approach which does not require us to depend on libwnck:
 src/file-manager/fm-desktop-icon-view.c:net_workarea_changed()
can be used to track changes of the current desktop workspace.

Does net_workarea_changed also work for viewports instead of virtual workspaces? I'm not really familiar with the EWMH specs to really know what all the terminology means.

I'm not sure that overall there's a consensus to have this kind of feature in Nautilus, but if we do, we should update this patch, as nautilus-directory-background.c doesn't exist anymore in git master.
