Description Vincent Trouilliez 2007-05-20 13:53:29 UTC
There is this idea of a new feature, that keeps haunting me, so I thought I would suggest it... In the old days, when there was no computer and just an expensive hi-fi stereo system sitting in the living room, you used to be able to easily record something, say a song or an interesting talk on the radio, just by pressing the record button on the tape deck.
Now, seeing as RB is very much the modern, digital replacement (in my case anyway) to this old audio gear, I sometimes miss this functionality !
Often, I listen to on-line radios via RB, and I wish I could just hit a big "Record" button on the toolbar, and that it would start immediately to record.
It would start recording immediately, without asking any question. It would just use defaults for file format (say OGG) and file location (say ~/Desktop, so the user can easily find his record afterward), or of course make these options user configurable in the main preferences dialog.
The concept could be extended to other audio streams than just radio. For example once, I had service discovery enabled, and I happened to see remote playlists from complete strangers. I was browsing their music files and discovered some nice ones, but had no easy way to make a copy of their song on my computer ! :-/ So it would have been fantastic if I had just a "Record" button to hit ! Of course ideally I would have a way to just right click on the remote song, and select something like "Retrieve remote song and make a local copy and add it to my playlist" ....
A third use case for this "Record" button could be for local files. For example, I am subscribed to a dozen radio podcasts. Sometimes, I wish I could extract part of it, an interesting passage of the talk, and e-mail to it to a friend.
Again here, a "Record" button could allow to do just that.

So I think a big Record button in the toolbar would not add much clutter, yet could make RB even more useful, more "just works"... What do you think ?......

If people find it an interesting idea, but not as useful/interesting as I think it is... maybe it could be developed as an optional plug-in ? This way people who don't like it won't see it, and those who like it could easily enable it :-)
I like plug-ins... ;-)
And then if over time it turns out that many people like it, it could be moved from the plug-in status, to the RB's core, and therefore be default.

Anyway, just some food for thoughts... ;-)

I just filed a very similar bug on Launchpad:

"I usually listen to online radios through rhythmbox, and have sometimes listened to something that I found interesting and would have liked to record.

I assume Gstreamer allows this operation? Would it be possible to give RB a button to start / stop recording from a radio stream?"
