Description Dennis Kaptain 2007-03-31 01:25:19 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Can't add contacts to a new message via "Select Contacts from Address Book" window.
Select Contacts from Address Book fields are as follows:
   Address Book = Personal
   Category = Any Category
Contacts box is empty although I have lots of contacts accessible via "Contacts - Evolution" window.

As a partial work around, I can select a contact in the Contacts - Evolution" window, click on the email address and start a new letter like that. This only works for emails going to a single contact. for multiple contacts I need to copy/paste addresses to the To: field in the new message.

Steps to reproduce:
1. File->New->Mail Message (new "Compose Message" window opens)
2. Click "To:" Button (new "Select Contacts from Address Book" window opens)
3. "Contacts" box is empty

Actual results:
Select Contacts from Address Book - "Contacts" box is empty

Expected results:
The box should contain a list of my contacts.

Does this happen every time?
Yes

Other information:
output of CAMEL_DEBUG=all evolution >& evo.log including program start up and all steps listed above is available at http://www.kaptain.us/evo.log
I believe the important line is:
(evolution:24637): e-data-server-ui-CRITICAL **: e_source_combo_box_set_active_uid: assertion `!iter_was_set' failed

matthew, shouldn't this be fixed in FC? (cf. bug 405531)
Comment 5 Leslie Satenstein 2007-04-01 14:12:54 UTC
Here is some additional, but perhaps useless information.
The version of evolution prior to a reinstall of Fedora was the most current that is currently installed with Fedore Core 6. Evolution sendmail worked properly, and it still does with that version.

I have a dual boot, with a copy of the /home to the target /home, and from the target system (now Fc7), the blanks in the contacts list before the first category are there. This is what is stopping sendmail.

I know it does not belong here, but possibly we need to know how to export a contact list from one version of evolution for export to another.

Leslie.
Comment 6 Dennis Kaptain 2007-04-01 14:31:55 UTC
Leslie Satenstein, you are on to something. My /home partition is in fact copied from my previous FC6 installation.

Has the data file format changed between versions? If so, it shouldn't be too hard to write a stand alone PERL/python/... script to convert it to the new format. Although it would be more elegant to integrate that function into evolution, since it is a one time process a stand alone program wouldn't be too bad.

If the file format hasn't changed, why should a new version of evolution have a problem with an older data file?
Comment 7 André Klapper 2007-04-01 14:48:17 UTC
wait, now you talk about "blanks in the contacts list" - that's something totally different. what are we talking about here? can somebody provide a screenshot, please?
and no, the file format has not been changed.
Comment 8 Matthew Barnes 2007-04-01 16:32:53 UTC
I think the reporter is right that the CRITICAL warning is the key:

(evolution:24637): e-data-server-ui-CRITICAL **:
e_source_combo_box_set_active_uid: assertion `!iter_was_set' failed

ESourceComboBox is my own handiwork (bug #417999), which was placed in Fedora Development for field testing. Good to see Rawhide users catching this stuff before it makes it upstream.

Since this is Fedora-specific, I'm closing this bug as NOTGNOME and moving it downstream. Should have a fix shortly. For further updates, please see:

This shows evolution in the back, a new message, and the select contacts form.

Screen shot of desktop

Since I'm at work and can't access my FC7 desktop, this is a screen shot from my FC6 laptop with the image edited to show the missing contacts as it appears on my FC7 system. My laptop is set to Spanish. Espero que pueden leer español.
Comment 11 Leslie Satenstein 2007-04-02 00:23:26 UTC
I researched all the menu options, and found where I could download the contact list as a vcard.

In the target Evolution application, I created a new address book using the import vcard to address book (it imports, eliminating duplicates). I then deleted the existing address book (by using the delete key on the address book title. Otherwise a delete is not possible).

I reloaded that address book and the result is the same, I have to switch address books to and back to make it work.

And if one is not careful, it cripples Gnome. By that, all desktop contents are gone, and the menus open but there is no execution. That means, no logoff, except by the fameous control-alt-backspace.

The evolution bug causes the loss of the existing theme. A system reboot is necessary to restore things. Fortunately this is a test3 version and not a final.
Comment 12 André Klapper 2007-04-02 02:29:07 UTC
Leslie: I have no idea what you mean by "it cripples GNOME" and how this is related to any theme problems, sounds like something totally different to me.
Comment 13 Leslie Satenstein 2007-04-02 20:42:18 UTC
I can only write here what happened twice.
I was in eveolution, trying to remove the Personal (address book, after I created a backup one. From normal operations, I could not, as the delete button was masked.

However, with the right mouse button, the delete option was presented, and I did delete Personal Address book, and then copied the spare back to it.

Those two actions invoked a Contacts list error, which the system trapped.

When I left Evolution by quitting, all my desktop icons were gone. When I clicked on system, or menu, or any icon on the top panel, the menu would open, but no program would execute. That included the logout or shutdown commands.

The lower left icon (screen minimize) was inactive.

Ctl-Alt-Backspace logged me out, but after logging back in with my logon or another, clicking on a menu and the resultant entry or panel icon did not result in any action.

I was able to do the ctl-alt-f1, login as root, and do a reboot.

That is what I mean by crippled Gnome. Gnome would not even let me change themes, or invoke a terminal shell by the gui interface.

Il peut aller mieux.

PS. I was able to repeat the process and did it 3 times.
Comment 15 Matthew Barnes 2007-04-02 20:48:36 UTC
Leslie: Please open a separate bug for the problem you're encountering and include detailed steps to reproduce the problem. What you're describing isn't even remotely related to what this bug is about.

Stack Trace ???

after install of

evolution-debuginfo-2.10.0-5.fc7.i386.rpm

and forced dump
Comment 17 André Klapper 2007-04-03 00:44:10 UTC
Leslie: OK, now i understand what you meant by "cripples GNOME". sounds strange, i have not heard of something like that before.

can you please file a new bug report about this issue here?

hmm, the stacktrace misses some information. can you please also install evolution-data-server-debuginfo, glib2-debuginfo, gtk2-debuginfo, and libgnome-debuginfo and try again, if possible? thanks in advance.

Et oui, beaucoup de choses peuvent aller mieux, pas seulement Evolution... ;-)
