Bug 398950 - gedit should not use tabbed interface by default
gedit should not use tabbed interface by default

Description 6ywcdrm9fz7qp53 2007-01-21 06:53:55 UTC
gedit uses a tabbed interface by default. Even starting the
application a second time from the Applications menu, it opens a new tab in the
existing window instead of opening a new window. This is contrary to the single-document-interface GNOME
guideline. gedit should open a new window by default as every other program
does.

This will never happen since I will be the maintainer.

Please, read the ML archive for more info.

Could you please link to the discussion on the mailing list? I googled "gedit-list tab window" but it didn't turn up anything relevant.
Comment 3 Paolo Maggi 2007-01-21 11:50:41 UTC
We discussed this problem a lot of times both in bugzilla and in the ML.
I have no time now to search for all the links.

You can see for example: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gedit-list/2006-May/msg00024.html

but if I'm sure you can find a lot of other similar threads.

Gedit refuses to comply with the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines. Please drop it and use a different editor as the default in GNOME.

HIG:
"MDI has several inherent usability problems, so its use is discouraged in applications. It is better to open each document in a new primary window, with its own menubar, toolbars and statusbar, or allow multiple instances of your application to be run simultaneously. In either case, this leaves it for the window manager (acting on the user's preferences) rather than your application to decide how to group and present document windows from the same application."
Comment 5 Vincent Untz 2007-03-17 17:56:10 UTC
It's not useful to reopen the bug and assign it to general.

If you want another default text editor in GNOME, the first step is to get one proposed for inclusion in GNOME.
