Comment 4 Srinivasa Ragavan 2006-09-13 07:55:11 UTC
It is designed to carry forward the search, with a option to clear on switch folder. The later wasnt implemented. I guess, it was filed as a different bug.
Comment 5 Matthew Barnes 2006-09-13 16:11:59 UTC
The patch seems to work well for me. Thanks!

On a loosely related note, while testing the patch I selected "Important" from the Show menu thinking it would select messages marked as important. When it didn't work as expected, I realized that item is for messages LABELED as important, and I wanted the menu item called "Important Messages" to get messages MARKED as important.

Why are there two different ways to tag a message as "important"? That's very confusing for users. At the very least the Show menu items should be clarified. Should I file a bug about this or is there one already?
Comment 6 Srinivasa Ragavan 2006-09-14 05:06:51 UTC
Labels are IMAP labels that are carried on the server and Marking as Important is something local. There is a bug filed already IIRC and I have a patch, which breaks UI, add colors/image to menu item. It should be part of 2.9.

Matthew, lets not get this patch in. Im working on a global patch for 2.8.1 where the search is remembered on per folder basis (old behaviour. Lot of people seem to hate the new approch). Ill put that in and let us ditch this.
Comment 8 Matthew Barnes 2006-09-25 20:04:03 UTC
Okay by me. Is the previous patch safe to use, even if it's not ideal? I was going to ship it in Fedora Core 6 since it does seem to fix the buggy behavior. I'm afraid if I just drop the patch now people are going to scream regression.

I'll drop it if you have objections, though.
Comment 9 Srinivasa Ragavan 2006-09-26 05:59:04 UTC
no harm. It is still right, but not the ideal behaviour.
