GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 163044
palette edit dialog should allow palettes to be sorted
Last modified: 2018-05-24 11:21:02 UTC
It would be handy to allow the palette edit dialog to sort palettes. See http://adrian.gimp.org/patches/gimp-palette-sorting/ There is a patch there that gives the general idea, but I'll post a cleaned up one later.
Isn't this already handled sufficiently in bug #104639 ?
This is clearly a different solution than the one in bug #104639. The question, I guess, is how often people would actually use this functionality. Does having a palette sorted make it easier to pick the desired color from it? Are there other advantages? The motivation for this is not really explained either in this bug report or in bug #104639.
setting to NEEDINFO because this awaits information and/or a cleaned up patch.
Created attachment 37957 [details] Python Script to do the palette sorting Attached script does what is being asked. Maybe it could be better placed in the menus, but I understand that will be addressed altogether. Note that the script can be used right now by the bug requester and any other person who needs this feature.
Ideally, this would be well integrated into the ui. Various scripts exist to sort the palletes externally or via the PDB, but the ui is still kind of unobvious. The reason to sort pallettes? I found it useful as a way to break out of patterns when picking colors, since I could get different views on the same data. That was the primary motivation, just a simple tool to potentially help spur some creativity. It's also based on the painter palette dialog which allows some sorting options. In the case of painter, the palettes can also be used as a source of color when painting (similar to the way you can use gradients now).
I think comment #5 justifies to remove the NEEDINFO state.
