Description Adrian Custer 2004-09-30 10:49:29 UTC
The mouse context menu which appears over the preview area of the second panel
of the text importer for fixed-width data should be re-ordered and the word
"Delete" should be avoided as being scary.

The context menu current reads

Delete and merge left
Delete and merge right
----
Split
----
Widen
Narrow

Since the panel opens with the text a single column, the natural use order of
this menu is to split columns first so the "split" entry should be at the top of
the menu.

The word 'split' might be improved if we could find a small phrase that
indicates that the column in which the pointer is placed will be split and a new
column will be added.

The word 'Delete' is overly serious, indicating the possible loss of data. Since
the user has not yet seen the column inclusion/exclusion panel, this word leads
to thinking that data may not be imported or be lost. The idea of "merge"
sufficiently conveys the action so these entries could be changed to "Merge with
column on left/right" or some similr phrasing.

If it doesn't increase the width of the context menu, the words 'widen' and
'narrow' could be followed by "column" for clarity.

Comment 1 Morten Welinder 2004-09-30 14:08:57 UTC
The natural use for this dialog is to get rid of a column, however. Therefore
I would say that the order is right.

To create columns you really shouldn't be using this menu: a double click will
do. (I wish we had some kind of indication of that, though.)

I would agree with Morten. SHould we close this request?
Comment 3 Morten Welinder 2004-10-21 02:43:19 UTC
There is still the issue of wording.
Comment 4 Andreas J. Guelzow 2004-10-21 14:38:32 UTC
How would the following be:

Merge with column on left
Merge with column on right
----
Split this column
----
Widen this column
Narrow this column

or:

Merge this column to left
Merge this column to right
----
Split this column
----
Widen this column
Narrow this column
Comment 5 Jody Goldberg 2004-10-21 16:04:50 UTC
I like the 'Merge with' phrasing, and would propose 'Expand' and 'Shrink' in
place of Widen and narrow.
Comment 6 Andreas J. Guelzow 2004-10-21 17:02:20 UTC
Unless there are more comments I'll change the menu to:

Merge with column on left
Merge with column on right
----
Split this column
----
Expand this column
Shrink this column

beginning of next week.
