I fail to configure gtk 2.4.7 because it says either pango or Xft are missing

but I have installed both acceptable versions of pango, xft, fontconfig and all
other required dependencies.

The configure script then looks for gnome-config whcih I don't have (and which
seems to be related to 1.x versions)
